Charlie Alexander

I'm Charlie and I established Collections, Sorted in 2012. With a background in art history, I have particular knowledge and experience of working with art collections and have research interests in Modern British Art. Covering subjects from architecture to sailing, I have also worked with mixed heritage and archive collections containing family papers, furniture, jewellery, magazines and photography.

Based in South-East England, I work in a variety of settings - from corporate spaces to private homes - and have previously worked for clients including Towner Eastbourne, Cartier Ltd and The Portman Estate.

How I can help

The services I offer, to both individuals and organisations, include:
• Advising on collections care.
• Cataloguing and inventory management.
• Curating and project-managing exhibitions and events.
• General administration and day-to-day management.
• Picture research, image management and rights clearance.
• Researching and writing for print and online publications.
• Undertaking collection audits and physical boxing/sorting.

Working with me

I enjoy working with any size and type of collection and am fascinated by what, how and why people collect. Working with collections at every stage  - from those just getting started to those that are ready to be passed on and legacy projects - I operate discreetly with private collectors but can also help promote collections to a wide audience.

Collections can be dynamic and rewarding but can become overwhelming if not carefully managed. You may not define yourself as 'a collector', or the objects you own as a 'collection', and would just like some help with your 'stuff'. Wherever you are in the process, I would love to help.

Previous clients have said -

"As a family-owned landed estate our records span several centuries and cover a wide variety of maps, plans and lease records as well as personal papers and memorabilia. Charlie managed our collection with expertise and professionalism, working with us both to preserve the records for the long-term and to find ways in which this valuable source material could inform and add value to current projects across the estate."

Katie Balderson, The Portman Estate, London

"Charlie’s gentle and knowledgeable guidance has been invaluable in helping me begin to get to grips with a large archive of my mother’s work on paper. Charlie’s evident interest in the material and her extensive experience in the field were encouraging and inspired me to start making my mother’s archive visible to a wider audience. I couldn’t have done it without her."
